Top Landscaping Trends in Lakeland for 2025

Are you dreaming of transforming your yard into a stunning outdoor oasis this year? As a Lakeland homeowner, you want a landscape that not only enhances your property’s beauty but also thrives in our unique Central Florida climate. At We Do It All Trees & Landscape, we’ve been helping Polk County residents create breathtaking outdoor environments since 2013, and we’re excited to share the most impactful landscaping trends shaping Lakeland properties in 2025.

What’s Driving Landscaping Trends in Lakeland This Year?

Lakeland’s distinctive climate and growing environmental awareness are reshaping landscape design preferences throughout Central Florida. With our hot, humid summers, occasional drought conditions, and mild winters, Lakeland homeowners are increasingly seeking sustainable solutions that balance aesthetics with practicality.

“Today’s homeowners want landscapes that reflect their personal style while addressing real environmental concerns,” explains Robert Warren of We Do It All Trees & Landscape. “We’re seeing a shift toward designs that conserve water, support local wildlife, and require less maintenance without sacrificing beauty.”

Climate-Resilient Designs Lead the Way

Florida’s weather patterns—including our intense summer heat, thunderstorms, and occasional drought conditions—have pushed climate resilience to the forefront of landscaping priorities. Homeowners are now designing landscapes that can withstand our unique weather challenges while remaining vibrant throughout the changing seasons.

10 Must-Know Landscaping Trends for Lakeland Homes in 2025

1. Water-Wise Xeriscaping with Native Florida Plants

With water conservation becoming increasingly important, xeriscaping is topping the trend list for 2025. This landscape design approach focuses on drought-resistant plants and efficient irrigation, making it perfect for Lakeland’s climate. Homeowners are embracing the beauty and practicality of native Florida species that thrive with minimal irrigation and fertilizer.

Popular Native Species for Lakeland Gardens:

  • Coontie Palm
  • Firebush
  • Muhly Grass
  • Saw Palmetto
  • Simpson’s Stopper
  • Florida Maple
  • Beautyberry
  • Coral Honeysuckle
  • Blanket Flower

These native plants not only reduce water consumption but also create natural habitats for local wildlife, including butterflies, birds, and beneficial insects. Their deep root systems help prevent soil erosion and improve drainage during heavy rains, addressing common challenges in Lakeland yards.

2. Multi-Functional Outdoor Living Spaces

The pandemic permanently changed how we view our homes, and outdoor living spaces continue to evolve in 2025. Lakeland homeowners are creating versatile outdoor areas that extend their living space beyond the walls of their home:

  • Outdoor Kitchens: Complete with built-in grills, countertops, and seating areas
  • Fire Pits and Outdoor Fireplaces: For year-round enjoyment, even during cooler winter evenings
  • Shade Structures: Pergolas, trellises, and pavilions that extend outdoor living seasons
  • Integrated Technology: Weather-resistant entertainment systems and landscape lighting
  • Multi-Level Patios and Decks: Creating dimension and visual interest

These multi-functional spaces are designed to maximize your property’s usable square footage while creating memorable gathering areas for family and friends. The integration of wood, concrete, and natural stone creates a harmonious blend of materials that complement both the architecture of your home and the surrounding landscape.

3. Smart Irrigation Systems for Water Conservation

Water management is a critical concern for Lakeland homeowners, and smart irrigation technology is revolutionizing how we maintain our landscapes. The latest systems include:

  • Weather-responsive controllers that adjust watering schedules based on local conditions
  • Soil moisture sensors that prevent overwatering and promote plant health
  • Drip irrigation for targeted plant watering with minimal waste
  • Rain barrels and harvesting systems that collect and reuse rainwater
  • Zoned irrigation that delivers different amounts of water to various landscape areas

“Proper irrigation is the foundation of a healthy landscape in Central Florida,” notes Robert Warren. “We’re installing more drip irrigation systems than ever before, especially in garden beds and around trees, where they deliver water directly to the root zone with minimal evaporation.”

These technologies not only conserve water but can also significantly reduce your utility bills while keeping your landscape looking its best throughout Lakeland’s hot summers.

4. Vertical Gardens and Green Walls

For Lakeland homeowners with limited space or those looking to create visual interest, vertical gardens and green walls are gaining popularity in 2025. These innovative planting systems:

  • Maximize growing space in small yards
  • Create privacy screens between properties
  • Reduce ambient temperature around your home
  • Add dramatic visual elements to outdoor spaces
  • Improve air quality and reduce noise pollution

Vertical gardens are particularly effective for growing herbs, vegetables, and flowering plants, combining beauty with functionality in your landscape design. Many Lakeland homeowners are incorporating these living walls into their front yard designs to create stunning curb appeal that stands out in the neighborhood.

5. Pollinator Gardens and Wildlife Habitats

Supporting local ecosystems has become a priority for many Lakeland homeowners. Pollinator gardens and wildlife-friendly landscapes feature:

  • Flowering plants that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds
  • Berry-producing shrubs that provide food for birds
  • Reduced or eliminated pesticide use to protect beneficial insects
  • Water features that serve as drinking sources for wildlife
  • Native plant species that support local biodiversity

“We’re designing more pollinator gardens than ever before,” says Robert Warren. “Homeowners love watching butterflies and hummingbirds visit their yard, and these gardens create a dynamic landscape that changes throughout the seasons.”

These environmentally friendly landscapes not only help sustain our local ecosystem but also create vibrant, colorful outdoor spaces that connect homeowners with nature right in their own backyard.

6. Advanced Landscape Lighting Systems

Landscape lighting has evolved significantly, and in 2025, we’re seeing Lakeland homeowners embrace sophisticated, energy-efficient options:

  • Solar-powered pathway lights that eliminate wiring needs
  • LED systems with extended lifespans and lower energy consumption
  • Smart lighting that can be controlled remotely via smartphone apps
  • Subtle, architectural lighting that highlights trees, garden features, and hardscapes
  • Color-changing options for special occasions

“Proper landscape lighting transforms your property after dark,” explains Robert Warren. “It’s not just about security—though that’s important—it’s about extending the enjoyment of your outdoor spaces into the evening hours and showcasing the beauty of your landscape design.”

7. Sustainable Lawn Alternatives

Traditional lawns require significant water, fertilizer, and maintenance. In 2025, Lakeland homeowners are exploring sustainable alternatives:

  • Microclover lawns that stay green with less water and fertilizer
  • Native groundcovers that thrive in partial shade under trees
  • Ornamental grasses that add movement and texture
  • Artificial turf in specific areas for year-round green with zero maintenance
  • Meadow-like plantings with wildflowers and native grasses

These lawn alternatives reduce the need for mowing, watering, and chemical treatments while creating more interesting and environmentally friendly landscapes.

8. Edible Landscaping Integration

The grow-your-own movement continues to gain momentum in Lakeland, with homeowners incorporating edible plants throughout their landscape design:

  • Herb gardens near outdoor kitchens for convenient cooking access
  • Fruit trees that provide both shade and seasonal harvests
  • Berry bushes integrated into ornamental plantings
  • Vegetable gardens designed as attractive landscape features
  • Edible flowers that serve both aesthetic and culinary purposes

“We’re seeing more requests to incorporate lemon trees, blueberry bushes, and herbs into traditional landscape designs,” notes Robert Warren. “Homeowners appreciate the connection to their food source and the freshness of home-grown produce.”

9. Hardscaping with Natural and Sustainable Materials

Hardscaping elements provide structure and function in the landscape, and in 2025, Lakeland homeowners are favoring natural and sustainable materials:

  • Permeable pavers that allow rainwater to soak into the ground
  • Natural stone retaining walls that prevent erosion on sloped properties
  • Recycled materials for pathways and garden borders
  • Wooden decks and pergolas from sustainably harvested sources
  • Concrete with decorative finishes that mimic natural materials

These hardscape elements create the framework for your landscape while addressing practical concerns like drainage and erosion control that are common in many Lakeland neighborhoods.

10. Rain Gardens and Sustainable Drainage Solutions

With Lakeland’s occasional heavy rainfall, managing water runoff is essential. In 2025, we’re seeing increased interest in attractive solutions to drainage problems:

  • Rain gardens planted with moisture-loving native species
  • Dry creek beds that channel water while adding visual interest
  • Bioswales that filter pollutants from runoff
  • Decorative gravel areas that improve percolation
  • Rock gardens that combine drainage functionality with aesthetic appeal

“Rain gardens are becoming a popular solution for low spots in Lakeland yards,” says Robert Warren. “They turn a potential problem area into a beautiful garden feature while helping manage stormwater naturally.”

Garden Design Trends for Lakeland’s Climate

Beyond these broader trends, specific garden design approaches are gaining traction in Lakeland:

Cottage Gardens with a Florida Twist

The romantic, informal style of cottage gardens is being adapted for Florida’s climate using:

  • Heat-tolerant perennials that provide year-round color
  • Flowering shrubs like hydrangea for dimension and structure
  • Herbs and edible flowers integrated throughout
  • Winding pathways and picket fences for classic charm
  • Drought-resistant plants that maintain the lush look with less water

Minimalist Landscape Design

For those preferring clean lines and uncluttered spaces:

  • Limited plant palette focusing on form and texture
  • Strategic use of negative space
  • Architectural plants as focal points
  • Simple hardscaping with premium materials
  • Japanese-inspired elements adapted for Florida’s climate

Tropical Oasis Retreats

Embracing Florida’s natural advantages:

  • Lush, layered plantings creating a resort-like atmosphere
  • Palm varieties for vertical interest and shade
  • Colorful foliage plants reducing dependency on flowers
  • Water features creating cooling effects and ambient sound
  • Outdoor rooms designed for relaxation and escape

Landscape Maintenance Considerations for 2025

Today’s homeowners are busy, and low-maintenance landscapes are more desirable than ever. Here are the maintenance trends shaping Lakeland landscapes in 2025:

Smart Lawn Mowers and Automation

Robotic lawn mowers are becoming more common in Lakeland, offering:

  • Scheduled mowing without human intervention
  • Even cutting that promotes lawn health
  • Reduced noise pollution compared to traditional mowers
  • Battery operation eliminating emissions
  • More time to enjoy your outdoor space rather than maintaining it

Strategic Mulching Practices

Proper mulching is essential in Florida’s climate:

  • Organic mulch that breaks down to improve soil health
  • Proper depth (2-3 inches) to conserve moisture without suffocating roots
  • Pine straw for acid-loving native plants
  • Decorative rock mulch in specific areas for long-term solutions
  • Regular refreshing to maintain appearance and functionality

Integrated Pest Management

Sustainable approaches to pest control are gaining favor:

  • Encouraging beneficial insects that prey on common pests
  • Using native plants that have natural resistance to local insects
  • Strategic plant placement to reduce disease pressure
  • Minimal intervention with targeted treatments when necessary
  • Regular monitoring to catch problems early

Cost Considerations for 2025 Landscaping Projects

When planning your landscape renovation, budget considerations are always important. Here’s what Lakeland homeowners can expect for various landscaping investments in 2025:

  • Basic Lawn Care: $100 – $300 per visit
  • Full Landscape Design: $500 – $2,500 depending on size and complexity
  • Garden Bed Installation: $500 – $3,000 depending on size and plant selection
  • Irrigation System Installation: $2,000 – $4,500 for comprehensive systems
  • Landscape Lighting: $800 – $3,000 depending on system size
  • Hardscaping Projects: $1,500 – $15,000+ based on materials and scope
  • Outdoor Kitchen: $5,000 – $30,000 depending on features
  • Tree Planting: $200 – $600 per tree depending on size and species

Remember that while initial costs are important, the long-term value of professional landscaping is significant. Quality landscaping can increase your property value by up to 12% while reducing maintenance costs over time through appropriate plant selection and efficient irrigation.

How to Incorporate These Trends in Your Lakeland Home

Ready to update your landscape with these 2025 trends? Here’s how to get started:

  • Assess your current landscape: Identify areas that need improvement or redesign
  • Consider your soil conditions: Test your soil to understand its composition and drainage characteristics
  • Prioritize your needs: Focus on solving existing problems first (drainage issues, privacy concerns, etc.)
  • Consider your lifestyle: Design spaces that complement how you actually use your outdoor areas
  • Plan for the long term: Choose plants and materials that will mature beautifully over time
  • Work with local experts: Partner with professionals who understand Lakeland’s unique climate and soil conditions

Why Professional Landscape Design Makes a Difference

While DIY projects can be rewarding, professional landscape design offers significant advantages for Lakeland homeowners:

  • Local expertise: Knowledge of which plants thrive in our specific climate and soil
  • Comprehensive planning: Integration of all elements including drainage, lighting, and irrigation
  • Long-term vision: Design that accounts for how plants will mature over time
  • Problem-solving: Solutions for challenging areas of your property
  • Increased property value: Professionally designed landscapes typically offer better return on investment
  • Access to resources: Connections with quality plant nurseries and material suppliers
  • Technical knowledge: Understanding of proper planting techniques, pruning methods, and maintenance requirements

“What sets professional landscaping apart is the integration of all elements into a cohesive design,” says Robert Warren. “It’s not just about planting trees and shrubs—it’s about creating outdoor spaces that enhance your lifestyle while addressing the practical needs of your property.”

This wasn’t your typical tree job. It was climbing high up, but for a drone. Robert and his crew was so quick to respond and very professional and I’m extremely grateful for his crew member Joe for getting it out of the tree. He had to climb up so high and he knew exactly what he was doing. I highly recommend for any tree jobs. ! Extremely fair priced and nice people :)

Robert and the crew were great. They cleared out the excessive amount of overgrowth we had in the yard, as well as removed 3 trees. They got the job done super quickly, and kept us updated as they went. And they gave us a pretty good deal for the work done. We're very happy with the work and will definitely use them again in the future.

I had a tree go down in a hurricane requiring stump grinding/removal. I also had some general brush clean-up and some tree pruning done. I called a few places but We Do It All was the most responsive. They visited my house same day…gave me an estimate (which I thought was very fair) same day, and they took care of all the work the following day. The guys who did the job were very respectful of the property. They did a great job, and cleaned up nicely before leaving. Overall, I’m very happy with the service they provided, and I would definitely reach out to them again if I need some help. Well done guys. Thank you.

Another excellent job by Robert, Alta & their crew! This the 2nd time that we've used We Do It Tree’s and Landscaping and both times they have provided outstanding service. The first time we used the crew, they trimmed our oak tree branches over the driveway & backyard and trimmed our palm trees before a big storm during the hurricane season. Yesterday they removed our dead oak tree and the stump, dead palm tree, and trimmed our palms. Robert was easy to communicate with. He’s very helpful, kind, professional. His prices are extremely reasonable (he beat out every company’s estimate). The crew showed up on time, completed the job and cleaned up once they were done I highly recommend We Do It Tree’s and Landscaping!!!

Removed some shrubs and mulched. They damaged my sprinkler and my yard flooded when it came on a few days later. I understand this can happen and had it repaired. But I asked if they would get me 2 or 3 bags of mulch to replace what had flooded away. They said “sure” but I never heard from them. After this review posted I heard from them immediately. I don’t have a problem with the work that was done and I understand the sprinkler was a risk I chose to take.. my point was that I asked for a little extra consideration to get a little more mulch because of what happened with the damaged sprinkler..He has generously offered to bring me mulch now but I have already had it taken care of.

This company is great. They have excellent knowledge of plants. They transformed our front yard from an overgrown mess to a well groomed paradise quickly and for a great price. We had other landscapers in the past try to tackle the front yard, but it was more expensive and didn't look nearly as nice. They also removed a huge hickory tree in our back yard in one afternoon. Robert and his crew did a good and thorough job of removing my 50 foot palm tree. They showed up (5 guys) and got to work right away with one man climbing the palm with a chain saw on his belt. He cut the top of the tree just right so it avoided my prized sago palms and then the crew removed the remaining trunk, cut it up and loaded it in their trailer and they did a good job of cleaning up the debris. I do recommend them.
