Landscape Design Tips for Florida’s Unique Climate

Transform your Central Florida property into a stunning, resilient outdoor space that thrives year-round

Florida’s unique subtropical climate presents both incredible opportunities and distinct challenges for homeowners looking to create beautiful outdoor spaces. Unlike northern climates where seasonal dormancy provides a natural reset, Central Florida’s year-round growing season demands thoughtful landscape design principles to achieve gardens that are both stunning and sustainable.

Whether you’re a new Florida resident adapting to the climate or a longtime homeowner ready to upgrade your front yard and outdoor spaces, understanding how to design a landscape that works with—rather than against—Florida’s environmental conditions is the key to success. From managing intense summer heat and humidity to preparing for hurricane season, smart landscape design can transform your property into a resilient, low-maintenance paradise.

At We Do It All Trees & Landscape, we’ve spent over a decade helping Central Florida homeowners create landscape plans that not only survive but thrive in our unique climate. Our team understands the specific challenges of landscape architecture for Polk and Hillsborough counties, from soil conditions to local weather patterns.

Understanding Florida’s Climate Challenges for Landscape Design

The Subtropical Reality

Central Florida’s subtropical climate means hot, humid summers with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and mild, dry winters. This creates a unique set of design considerations for any landscape plan:

Temperature Extremes: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with heat indices reaching dangerous levels, while winter can occasionally dip into the 30s, shocking tropical plants that aren’t suited for the climate.

Humidity Levels: High humidity throughout most of the year affects plant selection, disease pressure, and irrigation needs in your garden design.

Rainfall Patterns: The wet season (May through October) can bring 60+ inches of rain, while the dry season may see weeks without precipitation, making water features and proper drainage essential.

Storm Exposure: Hurricane season brings the potential for high winds, flooding, and debris damage that can devastate unprepared landscapes.

Soil Conditions in Central Florida

Understanding your type of soil is crucial for good landscape design. Most Central Florida properties feature:

  • Sandy soils that drain quickly but require frequent watering and amendment
  • Clay pockets that can create drainage issues and root problems for larger plants
  • pH variations that affect nutrient availability for different plant varieties
  • Organic matter deficiency requiring soil amendments for optimal plant health

Conducting soil testing is the first step in any professional landscape design process. This helps determine what soil amendments are needed and guides plant selection for your garden space.

Essential Principles of Landscape Design for Florida

1. Plan for Water Management

Effective water management is the foundation of successful Florida landscape design. Your property needs to handle both drought conditions and heavy rainfall through smart design principles.

Drainage Solutions:

  • Install French drains in low-lying areas prone to standing water
  • Create rain gardens to capture and filter runoff
  • Grade your landscape to direct water away from structures
  • Consider permeable hardscape materials for walkways and patio areas

Water Conservation Strategies:

  • Group plants with similar water needs together (hydrozoning)
  • Use mulch to retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation
  • Install efficient irrigation systems with smart controllers
  • Incorporate drought tolerant plants in high-visibility areas
  • Design water features that promote water conservation

2. Choose the Right Foundation Plants

Your landscape’s backbone should consist of plants that can handle Florida’s extremes while providing year-round structure. The design process should prioritize native and adapted species.

Ideal Foundation Characteristics:

  • Heat and humidity tolerance
  • Wind resistance for storm survival
  • Deep root systems for drought resilience
  • Disease resistance in humid conditions
  • Appropriate mature size for the space

3. Create Functional Outdoor Spaces

Strategic landscape design can create cooler, more comfortable outdoor spaces through thoughtful planning:

  • Use shade trees to reduce ground temperature and cooling costs
  • Position larger plants to protect more delicate species
  • Incorporate water features for evaporative cooling
  • Design wind corridors to promote air circulation
  • Plan seating areas with natural shade and screening

Consider adding hardscape elements like a pergola or fire pit to create cohesive outdoor living areas that unify your landscape design.

Plant Selection for Central Florida Landscape Design

Native Trees for Structure and Shade

Live Oak (Quercus virginiana)

  • Extremely wind resistant with strong root systems
  • Provides excellent shade for outdoor spaces
  • Long-lived and requires less maintenance
  • Perfect for larger properties and new landscape installations

Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)

  • Handles wet and dry growing conditions
  • Unique deciduous conifer for textural interest
  • Excellent for low-lying areas of your yard
  • Hurricane resistant with strong root systems

Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora)

  • Evergreen with glossy foliage year-round
  • Fragrant spring blooms add colors and textures
  • Good wind tolerance when properly pruned
  • Provides year-round privacy screening

Resilient Shrubs and Perennials

Firebush (Hamelia patens)

  • Native Florida plant requiring less maintenance
  • Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden
  • Blooms year-round in warm weather
  • Extremely heat tolerant for full sun areas

Coontie (Zamia integrifolia)

  • Florida’s only native cycad
  • Extremely drought tolerant once established
  • Provides textural interest in garden design
  • Deer resistant and low maintenance

Simpson’s Stopper (Myrcianthes fragrans)

  • Native coastal plant with salt tolerance
  • Small white flowers attract beneficial insects
  • Dense growth habit perfect for hedge plantings
  • Works well in both sun and shade areas

Palms for Tropical Appeal

Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto)

  • Florida’s state tree with excellent wind resistance
  • Slow growing but long-lived
  • Handles various soil types and site conditions
  • Creates a cohesive tropical landscape feel

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens)

  • Low-growing native palm for smaller plants areas
  • Excellent for naturalized garden spaces
  • Extremely drought tolerant groundcover
  • Provides wildlife habitat while requiring less maintenance

Groundcovers and Smaller Plants

For areas of your yard that need ground cover, consider these Florida-friendly options:

Beach Sunflower (Helianthus debilis)

  • Native perennial with bright yellow flowers
  • Excellent for sandy soil types
  • Attracts pollinators and creates color
  • Spreads naturally to unify landscape areas

Coontie (mentioned above)

  • Works as both shrub and groundcover
  • Native option requiring minimal irrigation
  • Provides consistent texture in flower beds

Water-Smart Landscape Design Strategies

Efficient Irrigation Design

Zone Your Irrigation:

  • Separate lawn areas from planting beds
  • Group plants with similar water needs
  • Use drip irrigation for trees and shrubs
  • Install rain sensors and smart controllers

Timing and Frequency:

  • Water early morning to reduce evaporation
  • Deep, infrequent watering encourages deep root systems
  • Adjust schedules seasonally based on plant needs
  • Monitor soil moisture rather than following rigid schedules

Drainage Solutions for Problem Areas

Many Central Florida properties struggle with standing water during the rainy season. Professional drainage solutions include:

French Drain Systems:

  • Redirect surface water away from problem areas
  • Prevent foundation damage and plant root rot
  • Can be integrated aesthetically into landscape design

Bioswales and Rain Gardens:

  • Natural-looking solutions for water management
  • Filter pollutants from runoff while adding beauty
  • Create habitat for beneficial wildlife
  • Reduce the need for traditional drainage infrastructure

Proper Grading:

  • Ensure water flows away from structures
  • Create gentle slopes that prevent erosion
  • Direct water to appropriate collection areas in your yard

Professional installation of drainage systems requires expertise in local soil conditions and proper slope calculations. At We Do It All Trees & Landscape, our team has extensive experience with Central Florida drainage challenges and can design solutions that protect your property while enhancing its beauty.

Storm-Resistant Landscape Design

Strategic Tree Placement

Hurricane season is a reality in Central Florida, making storm-resistant design essential for protecting your property investment and creating a good landscape that endures.

Safe Tree Placement Guidelines:

  • Plant large trees at least 20 feet from structures
  • Avoid planting directly over septic systems or utility lines
  • Consider mature size when selecting planting locations
  • Choose hurricane-resistant species for areas near homes

Tree Selection for Wind Resistance:

  • Live Oak and Bald Cypress have excellent wind tolerance
  • Avoid fast-growing, weak-wooded species near structures
  • Properly pruned trees are more wind resistant
  • Consider the tree’s natural growth habit and branch structure

Maintenance for Storm Preparedness

Regular Tree Care:

  • Annual professional trimming removes weak branches
  • Proper pruning techniques improve wind resistance
  • Dead or diseased trees should be removed promptly
  • Crown thinning allows wind to pass through more easily

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Identify trees that could threaten structures
  • Have a professional assessment before storm season
  • Keep emergency tree service contacts readily available
  • Understand your insurance coverage for tree damage

Garden Design Elements for Florida Landscapes

Creating Cohesive Garden Spaces

A successful landscape design incorporates various elements that work together to create a unified look:

Flower Beds and Planting Areas:

  • Design raised beds for better drainage in clay soil areas
  • Use plants of varying heights to create visual interest
  • Incorporate both annual and perennial options
  • Choose plants that complement each other in colors and textures

Hardscape Integration:

  • Include walkway materials that complement your home
  • Design patio areas that connect indoor and outdoor spaces
  • Add retaining walls for slope management and visual appeal
  • Consider pergola structures for shade and architectural interest

Lawn and Grass Areas:

  • Select appropriate grass types for your site conditions
  • Design lawn areas that are functional and proportional
  • Consider alternatives to traditional grass in challenging areas
  • Plan for proper irrigation coverage

Seasonal Interest and Color

Year-Round Appeal:

  • Choose plants that provide interest in different seasons
  • Include evergreen plants for consistent structure
  • Plan for seasonal color changes and bloom times
  • Use plants with interesting bark, foliage, or form

Native Plant Integration:

  • Incorporate Florida native species for sustainability
  • Use plants adapted to local growing conditions
  • Choose species that support local wildlife

Phased Implementation

Large landscape projects are often best approached in phases to manage costs and ensure success:

Phase 1: Foundation and Infrastructure

  • Remove hazardous trees and unwanted vegetation
  • Install necessary drainage systems
  • Establish irrigation infrastructure
  • Complete major grading and soil amendment

Phase 2: Structure and Framework

  • Install major shade trees and larger plants
  • Establish screening plants and hedge plantings
  • Create basic garden bed structure
  • Install hardscape elements like walkways and patios

Phase 3: Enhancement and Details

  • Add ornamental plants and seasonal color
  • Install landscape lighting systems
  • Create special garden areas and flower beds
  • Add decorative elements and water features

Planning Tips for Success

Design Considerations:

  • Start with a landscape plan that addresses your specific needs
  • Consider the mature size of all plants in your design
  • Plan for both immediate impact and long-term growth
  • Think about maintenance requirements and your available time

Plant Selection Guidelines:

  • Choose plants suited to your specific site conditions
  • Use plants that are appropriate for your plant hardiness zone
  • Select species that will thrive in sun and shade areas as needed
  • Consider how different plants will look together as they mature

Budget Planning:

  • Get multiple quotes for professional services
  • Consider the long-term value of quality plant material
  • Plan for ongoing maintenance costs
  • Factor in irrigation and amendment needs

I had a tree go down in a hurricane requiring stump grinding/removal. I also had some general brush clean-up and some tree pruning done. I called a few places but We Do It All was the most responsive. They visited my house same day…gave me an estimate (which I thought was very fair) same day, and they took care of all the work the following day. The guys who did the job were very respectful of the property. They did a great job, and cleaned up nicely before leaving. Overall, I’m very happy with the service they provided, and I would definitely reach out to them again if I need some help. Well done guys. Thank you.

Another excellent job by Robert, Alta & their crew! This the 2nd time that we've used We Do It Tree’s and Landscaping and both times they have provided outstanding service. The first time we used the crew, they trimmed our oak tree branches over the driveway & backyard and trimmed our palm trees before a big storm during the hurricane season. Yesterday they removed our dead oak tree and the stump, dead palm tree, and trimmed our palms. Robert was easy to communicate with. He’s very helpful, kind, professional. His prices are extremely reasonable (he beat out every company’s estimate). The crew showed up on time, completed the job and cleaned up once they were done I highly recommend We Do It Tree’s and Landscaping!!!

Removed some shrubs and mulched. They damaged my sprinkler and my yard flooded when it came on a few days later. I understand this can happen and had it repaired. But I asked if they would get me 2 or 3 bags of mulch to replace what had flooded away. They said “sure” but I never heard from them. After this review posted I heard from them immediately. I don’t have a problem with the work that was done and I understand the sprinkler was a risk I chose to take.. my point was that I asked for a little extra consideration to get a little more mulch because of what happened with the damaged sprinkler..He has generously offered to bring me mulch now but I have already had it taken care of.
